What Is a WHOIS Lookup?

WHOIS is a query-and-response protocol used to look up registration information for domain names and IP addresses. When you register a domain, the registrar records your contact details, registration dates, nameservers, and domain status in a publicly accessible WHOIS database. A WHOIS lookup queries that database and returns the stored information, giving you insight into who owns a domain, when it was created, and when it expires.

What WHOIS Data Includes

A typical WHOIS record contains the registrar (the company where the domain was purchased), creation and expiration dates, nameservers that handle DNS for the domain, and domain status codes such as clientTransferProhibited or serverDeleteProhibited. Some records also include the registrant's name, organization, and contact information, though this varies depending on privacy settings.

GDPR and WHOIS Privacy

Since the introduction of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018, many registrars redact personal information from public WHOIS records. Fields like registrant name, email, phone number, and address are often replaced with "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" or the registrar's privacy service contact. This means WHOIS lookups today typically show less personal data than they did historically, but still provide valuable technical and administrative details about a domain's registration status.

Common Uses for WHOIS

Security researchers use WHOIS to investigate suspicious domains and trace ownership patterns. Domain buyers check expiration dates to identify domains that may become available. System administrators verify nameserver delegations and registrar details during domain transfers. Legal teams reference WHOIS records when pursuing trademark disputes or domain abuse complaints. Whether you are debugging DNS issues, researching a domain's history, or verifying ownership, a WHOIS lookup is one of the fundamental tools in any network administrator's toolkit.
